Tesamorelin: Mechanism, Benefits, and Research

Tesamorelin: Mechanism, Benefits, and Research

Tesamorelin and Its Role in Reducing Visceral Abdominal Fat
⚠ Research Use OnlyNot for Human or Animal Consumption

Tesamorelin is a synthetic analogue of Growth Hormone-Releasing Hormone (GHRH). It mimics the action of GHRH and signals the pituitary gland to release growth hormone.

Tesamorelin is not indicated as a general weight-loss treatment. It has been studied and approved for reducing excess visceral abdominal fat in adults with HIV-associated lipodystrophy.

(Falutz et al., 2007)

What Is GHRH?

Growth Hormone-Releasing Hormone (GHRH) is a natural peptide produced in the hypothalamus of the brain. It has following functions:

  • GH Secretion: activates the pituitary gland to release growth hormone.
  • Metabolism: influence process related to protein synthesis and fat breakdown.
  • Cell Repair: helps in recovery and growth of tissue.
  • Daily Rhythm: contributes to the normal pattern of growth hormone secretion.

Natural GHRH is broken down relatively quickly in the body. Tesamorelin was developed as a longer-acting GHRH analogue.

Tesmorelin At A Glance

Features Details
Primary target Excess visceral abdominal fat
How it works Stimulates release of GH and IGF-1
Clinical indication HIV associated Lipodystrophy
Main clinical effect Reduces visceral abdominal fat

(Stanley et al., 2014)

Key Research & Clinical Findings

  • Secretion of Natural Growth Hormone
  • Targeted Visceral Fat Loss
  • Favorable Glucose Profile
  • Hepatic fat and metabolic health
  • Lean body mass and body composition

Bottom Line

Tesamorelin has been studied for its effects on visceral abdominal fat and related metabolic measures. Research has examined its effects on visceral fat, body composition, liver fat, and lean mass. Unlike medicines used specifically for appetite-based weight management, tesamorelin is indicated for reducing excess visceral abdominal fat in adults with HIV-associated lipodystrophy.
